Everyone learning Brazilian Portuguese wants to learn to speak as quickly as possible to start communicating with Brazilians as soon as they can. In this article, I will give you 5 tips to help you learn Portuguese in a faster and more fun way.
These are tips that I give to my students. I teach Brazilian Portuguese to students from all over the world, and I feel that they progress very quickly when they start applying these tips.
I personally apply the tips I’m about to share with you. I can communicate in 6 languages, and every day I interact with one language or another in the ways listed below.
First of all, regardless of your goals, studying Portuguese should be enjoyable. You need to have fun while doing it. There’s a concept called “active rest,” and through it, we’ll be able to accelerate our Portuguese studies.
First tip: Start watching movies in Portuguese.
You know that day when you come home tired and just want to watch a movie to relax? Why not watch a movie in Portuguese? I love doing this.
Just the other day, I watched the movie “7 años” in Spanish. I already speak at a good level, so I watch the movie without subtitles.
Depending on your level, you can take it step by step. Start with the audio in Portuguese and the subtitles in your native language. Once you feel more confident, switch to Portuguese subtitles, and later, try watching without any subtitles. This is a great exercise.
Here are some Brazilian movies to help you start practicing: Ainda Estou Aqui, Tropa de Elite, Cidade de Deus, Central do Brasil, Que Horas Ela Volta?, and Até que a Sorte Nos Separe. I’ll also recommend two series that I really enjoy: Cidade Invisível and Coisa Mais Linda.
Second tip: Learn Brazilian Portuguese with music.
I love music. I even try to play the guitar, so what I do is always try to combine my passions: music and languages.
Everything I do, I try to do with headphones on, listening to some foreign music: working out, walking on the beach, going to the market, etc. On the guitar, I try to learn some foreign songs to play. Here are some Brazilian bands I love:
Legião Urbana, Cássia Eller, Raul Seixas, Nação Zumbi, Los Hermanos, Charlie Brown Jr., O Rappa, Marisa Monte, and for more advanced learners, Chico Buarque and Toquinho.
To learn another language, I believe reading practice is essential, and there’s no better way than staying informed about what’s happening in the world. That’s why every week, I read blogs and newspapers from other countries, like Welt in German and Le Monde in French.
So here’s my third tip: To learn Portuguese and stay informed about what’s happening in Brazil at the same time, follow the newspaper O Globo and the portal UOL.
Many students I receive already have a basic understanding of Portuguese, usually gained through an app like Duolingo. I think it’s excellent—it’s a great starting point. The problem is that apps will only take you so far, and in many cases, at least for Brazilian Portuguese, the Portuguese taught is very formal and differs from the Portuguese spoken by Brazilians.
That’s why my fourth tip is: Schedule private lessons with a native Brazilian Portuguese teacher. This is the fastest way to progress. What you would learn in one year on your own can be learned with a teacher in a month when the right method is used. If you’d like, I offer private lessons. Send me a message, and I’ll explain how it works.
Now, let’s get to the last tip. I know that in many cases, hiring a private teacher is not within the budget. In these cases, the best option is an online course, and I have the perfect solution for you: I created an online course that will help you communicate with Brazilians in less than a year!
This is an online course I developed based on all my experience in the language field. After 5 years teaching Brazilian Portuguese to foreigners of various levels and nationalities, I identified the main difficulties that foreigners face when learning Portuguese.
The course has over 300 recorded lessons and 8 ebooks, which will finally help you achieve the dream of fluency in Portuguese.
It’s called the Brazilian Portuguese 360 Course, and you can get more information by clicking on the image below.

That’s it, folks. I hope this article helped, and I’m 100% available if you want to talk to me. Just send me an email!
See you soon!
